They’re here celebrating their 60th anniversary!

“The 145 acres sits in the middle of a rapidly developing residential area. “The DeYoung family turned away many offers from developers and sacrificed financially by offering this property to the Conservancy because they care tremendously about seeing it remain as it is today,” said Matt Heiman, a land protection specialist with the Leelanau Conservancy who has worked with the family for the last 4 years. “Under some scenarios, the property could have supported as many as 100 homes.” From the property’s highest vantage points there are views of west and east Grand Traverse Bay.”

Our wineries are clustered in two areas – on the Old Mission Peninsula north of Traverse City and on the larger Leelanau Peninsula northwest of Traverse City. Both peninulas provide excellent climate conditions for growing wine grapes. They also offer magnificent views of water and landscape. Tasting room tours are popular diversions on both peninulas any time of the year. Drive carefully!

The Beach Bums franchise has built a brand-new stadium near Chums Corner south of Traverse City. The team’s season stretches from May through September, and the team plays a grueling schedule of six to seven games per week, about half of them at their brand new $8 million ballpark, Wuerfel Field.
The ballpark features 3,518 permanent chair-back seats, 27 luxury suites, a corporate deck, a private table deck and an eight-foot pedestrian walkway that allows fans to walk around the recessed playing field. And because the field is below ground level, the park doesn’t reveal its true nature until one is actually inside, looking down past its rows of seats to the emerald green of the infield.
Chair-back seats will cost $10 per game, while general admission (lawn seats) sell for $6 ($3 for senior citizens and children five and under). Tickets can be ordered on the team’s web site at www.traversecitybeachbums.com.

One reason for the abundance of art offerings in the Traverse City area is the fine arts community at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. The center is located just 13 miles south of Traverse City. For seven decades Interlochen has been a resource for quality arts presentations (currently 750 concerts, visual art exhibits and theater and dance productions annually).
When attending the big name summer concerts, you might want to take advantage of the local restaurateurs who offer picnic fare for concertgoers to enjoy among the pines. Annually, performers include students and faculty as well as guest artists, 500 performances of the summer concert series and 200 plus in the winter. Tickets for the various performances are available through the Interlochen Box Office as well as online at http://tickets.interlochen.org.

There are more than 1,300 geocaches in Traverse City’s two main Zip Code areas – 49684 and 49686. Geocaching is an adventure game for people with GPS (Global Positioning System) devices. These are small handheld electronic devices that use satellite transmissions to locate exact positions on the ground. They are the modern equivalent of a compass. Participating in a geocache hunt is a good way to make a game out of owning a GPS unit. Individuals and organizations all over the world have set up caches, which can be simply a log book or a variety of different items. Whoever sets up a cache places the GPS coordinates on a worldwide Web site, www.geocaching.com, and others use those coordinates to try and find the cache. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a variety of rewards, ranging from comic books to postcards to whatever. Generally, if a participant takes something out of the cache, he or she is expected to leave something else in its place.

The Experience
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore offers magnificent views over sweeping vistas of Lake Michigan from atop high dunes, miles of perfect freshwater beaches, forested wilderness islands, hiking trails and a series of preserved historic farmsteads. The glistening waters of Lake Michigan make a stunning backdrop for the dunes and forests, while abundant wildlife and a diverse ecosystem thrill the nature lover.
Dune Climb
Children and energetic teens and adults often make it a special point to test the Dune Climb, a challenging but rewarding part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore visitor experience. The reward for climbers includes views of Glen Lake and the dunes’ summit. The Dune Climb is off M 109 eight miles north of Empire. Restroom facilities are provided. Those wishing to continue on can hike trails at three degrees of difficulty. They are: the rugged Dunes Trail, a 3.5 mile (5.6 km) trip to Lake Michigan and back, the moderately difficult 2.8 mile (4.5 km) loop trail to Sleeping Bear Point, and the easy Duneside Accessible Trail, a handicapped-accessible 1.8 mile (2.9 km) hike through fields and woods.

The trail network in and around Traverse City is just about the best you can get for in-line skating, hiking and biking. And it’s getting better all the time. Plans are proceeding to connect all the individual trails into one massive network. One of the best trails for all three activities is the Traverse Area Recreational Trail (TART). A good starting point is the TBA Career Tech Center on Parsons Road. From there, you can skate, hike, or bike to your heart’s content on a paved trail, then on a boardwalk through marshy lands out to Acme and back. It’s about an eight-mile round trip, and some of the restaurants along the way even put out water for travelers. The Leelanau Trail begins at Carter Road in Greilickville and ends at Suttons Bay. Only the first six miles are paved, however, so pack some hiking boots or rent a mountain bike if you want to go the 15-mile distance from Traverse City to Suttons Bay. On the east side of town, the Sand Lakes Quiet Area is excellent for hiking or mountain biking.

In the Traverse City area, images swirl with the wind… kids with grins illuminating their faces… a hot cup of chocolate… stolen moments by a dancing fire. Grab some serious air… a quick flip of the board, and you’re in the ozone… and there, you wonder… maybe the trip back home can wait one more day.
